When you create a new page in your Turbify store - say, for a new product or section - you've probably noticed that Turbify automatically assigns it a short and often cryptic URL. For example, if you name your page "Green Small T-Shirt," you might end up with a URL like:
www.yourstore.com/grsmt.html
That's not very helpful for customers - or for search engines.
The good news? There is a way to take control of your page URLs and make them more descriptive, like this:
www.yourstore.com/green-small-t-shirt.html
These types of URLs are easier to read, more likely to show up well in search results, and just look more professional.
Why This Happens
By default, when you create a new page using the "Item" or "Section" button in the Turbify editor, Turbify automatically generates a short internal ID based on your page name. You don't get to choose the ID, and that ID becomes the base for the page URL.
Two Simple Ways to Set Your Own URL
If you want to create your own custom ID (which controls the URL), there are two easy methods:
-
Use the "Contents" -> "New" Option
Instead of creating a new page through the "Item" or "Section" buttons, go to the Contents menu, then choose New.
Here, you can enter both the name of the page and the ID you want to use for the URL. -
Use a CSV File Upload
If you're uploading multiple items using Catalog Manager or Database Upload, include an ID column in your CSV file. That way, you can define exactly what each page's URL should be.
A Side Note: you may have noticed there is a field called product-url, however that field cannot be used to change the actual URL of the page. That field is used for an entirely different purpose and in most cases you should just leave that field blank.
A Simple Trick for Cleaner URLs
Here's the trick: even if you enter a full phrase like "Green Small T-Shirt" as the ID, Turbify will automatically clean it up into a valid format. It turns:
Green Small T-Shirt
into:
green-small-t-shirt
So if you're uploading pages or using the Contents -> New option, just put your descriptive name into the ID field. Turbify will handle the formatting.
Final Tip
Descriptive URLs not only help your customers understand what the page is about, they also give search engines better signals about your content. That can potentially lead to higher rankings and more traffic.
So next time you're adding a new page, take a few extra seconds to set the ID - and give your URL (and your SEO) a little upgrade.
