Shopify Themes vs. Turbify Themes
Similarly to Turbify, Shopify uses its own templating language called Liquid to generate themes (the equivalent of Turbify Templates) to create the storefront and interface with the underlying catalog. While Turbify's RTML is far more powerful than Liquid, when it comes to readily available themes Turbify lags considerably behind Shopify. To date, there are only three themes available in Turbify: Fanal (https://fanal-demo.stores.turbify.net/), DiVitto (https://divitto-demo.stores.turbify.net/), and Sambee (https://sambee-demo.stores.turbify.net/). On top of that, these themes were created many years ago and by today's standards they are rather outdated (we know, as we were contracted to create these themes for what was then Yahoo).
As a side note, if you are still on the fence about whether to migrate or stay on Turbify (and there are many good reasons to stay; contact us to discuss), we do offer a modernized version of the Fanal theme built using up-to-date technology. You can learn more about this upgraded theme at https://www.ytimes.com/turbify-facelift-theme.html.
When it comes to readily available themes, Shopify offers close to a thousand themes as of this writing, and the list grows by the day. You can browse all the free and premium themes at https://themes.shopify.com. These themes differ not only in visuals and user interface but also in terms of functionality. They offer custom features such as mega menus, recently viewed products, multiple image galleries, swatch-style variant selectors, countdown timers, and much more. In addition, while applying a Turbify theme typically requires the help of a professional, you can install and try a Shopify theme on your own without affecting your Shopify store's current live storefront.
Analysis Paralysis
While you can choose from hundreds of themes in Shopify, all these choices can lead to what is called "analysis paralysis" or "choice overload." Each theme is different and offers different functions and features, and they are all customizable in a myriad of ways, which may make it very hard to evaluate or choose a theme for your Shopify store.
You will soon find that while some themes offer features you need, they may be lacking in other areas. It is nearly impossible to find a theme that is a perfect fit in all respects. If a theme is missing some functionality you need, you will need to turn to custom apps to fill the gap, and there too you will find thousands of options, many of which will be perfect in some areas but lacking in others.
Themes come with their own configuration settings and features, all of which differ from theme to theme, so there will definitely be a learning curve to discover what your selected theme offers and how to use those features and functions.
Since themes are written in Liquid (Shopify's templating language), it is possible to "plug the holes" by having an expert like us modify the theme you select. One important aspect of modifying themes in this way is that when a theme comes out with an update, you will need the help of a professional to apply the update or else run the risk of losing your theme customizations. Note that this does not apply to customizations provided by the theme itself: any customizations you make via the theme's own settings will be carried forward automatically to any future updates of the same theme.
Enterprise Theme
While we have tried and evaluated a large number of themes, we cannot say we have seen them all, of course. However, after comparing many of them, we settled on a premium theme called "Enterprise" that we recommend. It is a very modern and fast theme that comes with a high number of custom functions and three "flavors." Since we have worked with this theme on a number of Turbify migration projects, we know the ins and outs of the theme and can customize it to match your current Turbify corporate style and improve on it.
